“I can wait for the galaxy outside to get a little kinder.”
I love space stories. I love Star Wars, and Star Wars has some of the best fanfic is some of the best I’ve ever read. In fact, one of my favourite stories ever is this fic. The thing I like best in those stories is when they focus on small stories – there are huge intergalactic events happening, and there are stories about fragments of individual lives. Even the films play into this in some ways, and those are the bits that enchant me, the elements that capture my imagination and my heart. Space stories are, of course, about people, and I like it best when that’s the focus.
The long way to a small angry planet is that kind of story. It’s about a small group of people, set almost entirely on one spaceship. It feels accessible in a way that I’ve rarely come across beyond fanfic, in space stories. The world building is wonderful, not laboured, not too detailed. It feels like being dropped into something established, and some things are never quite explained, and I like that a lot. I love the subtle queerness – and the less subtle queerness, too. It isn’t a big deal, but it is important.
I keep thinking about it, and I am massively looking forward to reading the next one.
